Peels, Scrubs and Masks to Rejuvenate Your Skin

Hygiène féminine : ce qu’il faut savoirHygiène féminine : ce qu’il faut savoir

With all the little jars of beauty magic on the market today, it can be hard to know what to buy. Take masks and exfoliants, for instance. Although they’re all too often used interchangeably, they actually work differently and address different needs. Let’s take a closer look!

Everyone knows that exfoliating is an essential step in any skincare regimen. By removing dead skin cells and impurities, it reveals a brighter complexion. It also oxygenates and softens your skin, stimulates the growth of new skin cells, and improves the absorption of any treatments and moisturizers applied afterwards. There are two different types of exfoliating products on the market: mechanical exfoliants and chemical exfoliants, a.k.a. scrubs and peels.

Peels

Peels use chemical ingredients such as enzymes or fruit acids (AHAs and BHAs) to remove dead cells from the skin’s surface. In doing so, they reveal smoother, more radiant skin and a rosier, more even complexion in just a few minutes—the time it takes to let the formula work its magic and rinse it away with warm water. Peels are generally gentler on your skin than scrubs, since they don’t cause those tiny, invisible cuts known as microabrasions.

Use once or twice a week, depending on whether your skin is sensitive or oily.

Scrubs

Scrubs contain abrasive particles such as tiny synthetic beads, grains of sugar, or fragments of fruit pits or seeds. Rubbing them gently on your face can be a fast and effective way to remove any type of residue (dead skin cells, dirt and grime, excess oil, etc.). They’re often said to be better for tougher, oily skin. If you have sensitive skin, proceed with caution, since they can cause irritation.

Use once a week if you have mixed or oily skin.

Masks: A targeted treatment

Unlike chemical and mechanical exfoliants, masks are concentrated formulas designed for a specific purpose. There are purifying masks that absorb excess oil, tighten pores and mattify the skin; hydrating masks that trap moisture in the skin, making it softer and more supple; nourishing masks that deliver essential nutrients, like beneficial vitamins and minerals; and soothing masks that reduce redness, inflammation and irritation.

Apply a thick, even layer to your whole face or target areas such as the T-zone or eye contours. The frequency of use will vary depending on what the mask does and what your skin needs. Some masks, such as hydrating masks, can be used daily, while others should only be used from time to time. That’s the case for purifying masks, which can make your skin more sensitive.
