These are fairly small mushrooms: although there are exceptions, they generally grow to no more than 10 cm, with a maximum of 20 cm. Their white stems are hollow. Their caps are honeycombed, with a slightly rubbery consistency. Morels thrive in cool, chalky soils, orchards, rubble and recently burned areas. Rarely growing alone, they are often found in groups, under ash trees at the edge of woods.
